Healthy Chicken Shawarma

This recipe is curated to provide numerous health benefits while keeping calories to a minimum. It features powerful, nutritious and simple ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 100g chicken breast, boneless and skinless
  • 1/4 cup plain low-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: fresh parsley or cilantro for garnish

Directions:

  1. Prepare the marinade: In a bowl, mix the Greek yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  2. Marinate the chicken: Coat the chicken breast with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 4 hours for deeper flavor).
  3. Cook the chicken: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium heat. Cook the marinated chicken for about 6-7 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  4. Rest and slice: Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing into strips.
  5. Garnish and serve: Optional—garnish with fresh parsley or cilantro. Serve with a side of vegetables or in a whole wheat pita if desired. Enjoy your healthy chicken shawarma!
